You cannot study the Bible diligently and earnestly without being struck by an obvious fact — the whole matter of personal holiness is highly important to God!

Prayer for Holiness
God’s Word says, “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord” — Hebrews 12:14
O Jesus,
you died for me —
help me live for you
so all will see
you in me.
O Jesus,
you are true love —
help me see my need
and let you lead
so I would love like you.
O Jesus,
you did God’s will
and lived God’s way —
help me follow
in your steps.
O Jesus,
you are true life,
eternal, joyous, and free —
help me in holiness be
who I was meant to be.

Make Every Effort

In My Soul I Feel
We’ve been looking at 2 Corinthians 7:1, and seeing that once we have the promises of God, we don’t want anything that stains us. Here’s a devotional poem from Christ-follower Tim Adornetto seeing the same. It’s called “In My Soul I Feel.”
In my soul I feel
the hate of my enemy.
He’s prowling, teeth bared,
ready to devour me.
Masquerading as the light,
making every wrong seem alright,
he’s raking at my heart, and
staking a claim on my soul.
But Jesus, when I call your name,
the roaring lion’s reduced to crying,
his tail’s tucked, his reign is dying.
No, I need not fear him
when I am filled with you!
In my soul I feel
the weight of my sinfulness,
the pride of my rigidness,
but Lord, I still long
for your righteousness.
So I confess my sin to you, and
your love comes shining through;
your forgiveness transforms me.
Yes Jesus, when I call your name,
the roaring lion’s reduced to crying,
his tail’s tucked, his reign is dying.
No, I need not fear him
when I am filled with you!

To be engaged against sin is to fight in a good cause, for sin is the worst enemy both to God and man. Our spiritual warfare is both honorable and necessary; for we are only defending ourselves against that which would destroy us, if it should get the victory over us.
From Matthew Henry’s “Commentary on the Whole Bible”
A new work within means a new walk without. Because of the indwelling Spirit, there comes the outer manifestation of His presence. Where the likeness of sinful flesh was seen, now a new likeness prevails.
