Looking for My Hope

We’ve been looking at Psalm 130:7, and seeing that we must put our hope in the Lord. Here’s a devotional poem from Christ-follower Rena Himick seeing the same. It’s called “Looking for My Hope.”

Not in my car,
not in my house,
not at the bank —
my hope’s not there.

Not with my friends,
not in my church,
not in love —
my hope’s not there.

Not in myself,
though there I look
a very long time —
my hope’s not there.

I’ve looked and looked
and now I know:
my hope’s in Him
who brought me here.

My Savior holds
my hope secure:
Jesus, King, is
Keeper of My Hope!

You want nothing more than a cry to get you out of the depths. There is no way for you up out of the pit but to cry to God, and that will bring a rope down. Nay, rather, the rope is there. Your grasping the rope and your cry are one.

Alexander MacLaren

Depths! What depths man can be cast into! Depths of poverty, stripped bare of all earthly possessions and dear friends. Depths of sorrow, with plans all ripped to pieces by the storms of adversity. Depths of mental darkness, with nothing but surrounding sorrow and despair. Depths of sin, depths to which there seems to be no bottom. What can we do when in such depths? Cry! Cry unto the Lord!

Herbert Lockyer

The Size of Your Hope

God’s Word says, “Put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with Him is full redemption” — Psalm 130:7

The size of your God
is the size of your hope.

We wear only rags of hope
when we put our hope
in small gods:
in plans, in people, in ourselves.
For the day always comes
when small gods
meet their match,
when life, or death,
green with consequence,
beats small gods into submission
then gloats, “puny god.”

Not so God Almighty!
We wear royal robes of hope
when we put our hope
in the Living God:
in His infinite love and redemption.
Already we’ve seen
His light and love
conquer wayward hearts.
And the day will come
when He returns and
beats all evil into submission.

In the Father’s Holy Family

We’ve been looking at 1 Peter 1:15, and seeing that just as the Father who called us is holy, so we should be holy in all we do. Here’s a devotional poem from Christ-follower Rena Himick seeing the same. It’s called “In the Father’s Holy Family.”

Adopted! I’ve been adopted!
I was a runaway,
a ragamuffin in
an orphanage of sin.
But now through Christ Jesus,
my hero, king, and kin,
my Father brings me home again!

Family! His family forever!
Not pridefully alone,
walking, weeping, sleeping,
on squalid streets of self.
Through my brother Jesus,
I am my Father’s child
and have His Kingdom for a home.

Family! His family forever!
Taught day by gracious day
the Father’s family way:
His holy truth above,
His holy life of love,
His reborn child set free
to bear the family resemblance.
