For after all, to be a Christian is not to be like other professing Christians, or to accept ecclesiastical propositions; to be a Christian is to admire Jesus so sincerely and so fervently that the whole life goes out to him in an aspiration to be like him.

Charles Edward Jefferson

God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son.

Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of Romans 8:29

He Is the Great e.g.

The Apostles taught, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” — 1 Corinthians 11:1

e.g. means for example,
i.e. means that is:
a little Latin
it’ll fatten
your vocabulary to know.
e.g. — exempli gratia.
i.e. — id est.

There’s power in i.e.,
to rephrase,
to clarify,
to explain
so well
that we begin
to understand.

But the power of i.e.
pales before e.g.,
for examples
make words
become flesh
and take shape
before our eyes.

Jesus is the great e.g.,
the sovereign Word
become the one Example
for every life
at every time.
And each of us who follow
are to be a little e.g. in Him.

Follow My Example

The Apostles taught, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” — 1 Corinthians 11:1

Deciding Daily

We’ve been looking at John 13:15, and seeing that we should do as Jesus has done for us. Here’s a devotional poem from Christ-following gastroenterologist Jeff Hallett seeing the same. It’s called “Deciding Daily.”

The love of power,
or the power of love?
Jesus, help me see:

my pride
put to death
by humility;

my worry
put to death
by faith;

my uncertainty
put to death
by hope;

my self-love
put to death
by your love.

Passion with tears flows
from the power of your love.

Passion with anger flows
from my self’s love of power.

Give me passion with tears today.

God’s highest purpose in the redemption of sinful humanity was based in His hope that we would allow Him to reproduce the likeness of Jesus Christ in our once-sinful lives!
