He is Light for all, Life for all, and Liberty for all.

Herbert Lockyer

Jesus, as Light of the World, is the One who makes clear the meaning and destiny of human existence.

The Enlightenment

God’s Word says, “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind” — John 1:4

The Enlightenment —
the age of history,
just three centuries ago,
when we in the West
resolved boldly
to live largely
by human reason and science,
to prosper and be
politically free.

My Enlightenment —
how much more enlightened
I would be
if I now
resolved boldly
to live largely
by God’s Reason and Word,
to be soul-rich and
completely free.
Then I would be
a true scientist of life,
enlightened and enlivened
by the Light and the Life
that made the world.

The Life-Light

Seeds of Knowledge

We’ve been looking at John 1:1, and seeing that Jesus is the Word, the Thought, the Reason, of God. Here’s a devotional poem from Christ-follower Clayton Lorenz seeing the same. It’s called “Seeds of Knowledge.”

Lord, throw me
the seeds of knowledge,
and of wisdom.

Till the soil of my heart.
Prepare it for You, so
they may land in good soil.

Let none be wasted.
Let the roots dig
deep into my heart.

Strengthen them, Lord.
May they withstand
the winds, and the storms, of life.

Let them all grow
from the dirt within me,
to the beauty of You!

The surest road to wisdom is not speculation, reasoning, or reading human books, but meditation upon the Word of God. . . . O for grace to study the Bible with Jesus as both our teacher and our lesson!

Charles Spurgeon
